Polo Pony
Polo Pony
A horse or pony used for polo. Can be of any breed, color, size or gender according to players preference.
  Best Playing Pony
Best Playing Pony (BPP)
An award given to the outstanding polo pony of the game/match or tournament.
     
A String of Polo Ponies
String
A term used to describe the group of horses used or owned by a player in a game, tournament or season. Strings usually range from 4 to 12 horses depending on the handicap level of polo being played.
  A Bump or Ride Off
Bump or Ride Off
When one player pushes another player away from the ball to win possession of the ball. Ride Offs or Bumps must be done at a safe angle for both horses. Ride Offs or Bumps are also used as a defensive manuever to keep an opposing player away from the action.
     
Spare Polo Pony
Spare
An extra polo pony placed outside the end lines for a player to switch to when the horse they are playing shows signs of fatigue. In high goal (20 goal and above) some players will bring two spares and place one spare on each end of the field for quicker changing.

A method of cooling down a polo pony after a chukker.

Made Pony
A horse that has completed its polo training and is ready for tournament play.
    Shaved mane and tied tail.
Shaved Mane and Tied Tail
Traditionally the hair along the horses neck (the mane) is shaved to prevent tangling in the riders reins and the tail is tied or taped up to avoid interference with the mallet.

Wraps or Bandages and Boots
Protective gear worn on the horses legs during games to privide support and prevent injury.
  A unit of measurement to record the height of a Polo Pony.
Hand (h)
A unit of measurement to record a horse's height. One hand equals 4". Height is measured from the ground to the horse's withers. Originally the palm of a persons hand was used for the measurement. The average height for polo ponies is between 15-15.3h.
